How to Diagnose Problems With Your HVAC System

by | Aug 31, 2021 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

If you have issues with your HVAC system, there are some things that you can check out that will allow you to diagnose the problem. Sometimes, the issue is simple, and you can fix it yourself. However, it is important to note that if you cannot find the problem or the problem is beyond your skillset, that you call for a repair by a licensed technician as soon as possible.

Check The Breakers

The first thing that you will want to do when your heating and cooling system quits working is to check the breakers. When your system goes out, it could be due to the breaker tripping. This could be caused just because the system was temporarily overloaded, something is wrong with one of the units, or you are having electrical issues. If the breaker has tripped, switch it back to the on position and see if your unit comes on. If your unit comes on and then the breaker trips again, you will want to call out an HVAC professional for a repair.

Check Your Fuses

In some cases, especially if you have an older home, you will have a fuse box. If you think the fuse has blown, turn off the main power to the fuse box and replace the blown fuse. If the fuse blows again, you will know to call a technician out as soon as possible.

Inspecting The Thermostat

If your HVAC unit is not working as it should, you will want to check the thermostat. Make sure that it is getting power and if it relies on batteries, check to ensure that it is working, and you do not need to put in batteries. If you put in batteries or you are on your home’s electricity and your thermostat is not working, call in for a repair.

Check For Dirty Coils

If you can see the coils above your air handler, check them to see if they are dirty. Dirty coils can cause your HVAC unit not to work well. They will need to be cleaned by a professional as soon as possible to help your unit to work well.

Check Your Filters

If you notice that the air coming out of your registers is not blowing well, this could be a sign that your filter is clogged or incorrectly sized. Your filter should be changed out monthly, and if it is not, it can become clogged, which will not allow good airflow throughout your house and can cause unnecessary stress on your unit.

Checking The Ductwork

Another issue that your home can face is that the ductwork may be bad. Over time ductwork can wear out, especially if it was improperly installed. Animals like rodents can get under your house and cause ductwork to be knocked down or holes to be put in it. If this is the case, you will need to call for help with furnace repair in Edmonton, or wherever is local to you, and have your duct repaired. If you do not have this done, your HVAC system will continue to run inefficiently, and it could lead to the early death of your system.

Checking Out The Indoor Unit

You can check out your HVAC unit, but you will need to be careful in doing so. Carefully open your unit up and look for any signs of broken wiring. You will also need to look for things like a broken coil. If you see anything wrong with the physical unit, you will want to call for a repair as soon as possible.

Checking Out the Outdoor Unit

Go to your outdoor unit and inspect it. Make sure that there is no dust or debris caking up on the unit. If there is, you will want to clean it. You can purchase a cleaner and use your water hose to clean the unit. If you are not comfortable with cleaning the unit, you can have a local HVAC company do it for you. If you notice debris or your fan moving slowly, you will want to call in for a repair as soon as possible.

Troubleshooting your HVAC system will help you to find simple problems that you can correct yourself and alert you to bigger problems. If you have an issue with your HVAC system that you cannot repair, call an HVAC technician today that can help get your system up and running again.
